Printing plates are the mainstream choice for regular printing, especially exercise book production. Manufacturers also recommend minimizing frequent plate replacement. Besides, the industry follows the rule of one color, one plate for layout design. This article clarifies the differences between sleeves and printing plates, and explains the principles behind these common production practices.

Flexo sleeves are integrated cylindrical structures made of fiberglass and compressible polyurethane. They are seamless circular bodies mounted directly onto mandrels without plate mounting.
Printing plates are flat sheet-shaped photosensitive polymer materials. They need adhesive tape to be mounted onto sleeves or mandrels. They are flexible and can be cut freely to fit various roller sizes.
Sleeves are engraved or exposed as a whole. Graphics are formed directly on the sleeve surface with 360° seamless continuity. Modification is complicated and customized.
Printing plates are processed via UV exposure, washing and curing. Production is simple and flexible. Plates can be cut or revised quickly with low cost for small adjustments.
Seamless sleeves deliver high register accuracy and stable performance at high speed, with even solid ink coverage. However, they have limited flexibility and demand flat substrates and precise equipment.
Printing plates feature excellent elasticity. They can adapt to uneven paper surfaces and tolerate minor fluctuations in printing pressure. The downside is slight register deviation caused by plate joining seams.
Sleeves have high upfront costs and long lead times, but can be re-engraved repeatedly for long-term mass production with fixed artwork.
Printing plates are low-cost and easy to source. They are disposable after imaging, with limited print runs, ideal for jobs with frequent artwork changes.

Common substrates such as ordinary paper often have uneven surfaces. Flexible printing plates deform slightly under pressure to fit the paper, avoiding missing print or uneven ink density.
Plate making is fast and affordable. Plates can be cut and revised conveniently, perfectly matching small-batch and diversified orders with frequent layout changes.
Mounting and changing printing plates is straightforward. Operators can finish setup quickly without complicated calibration.

Different inks are separated on independent plates to avoid color mixing, dirty print and distorted hues.
Each color station can separately adjust printing pressure, ink volume and speed according to graphic coverage.
Each plate can be calibrated individually for perfect color alignment, avoiding misalignment and double images.
Defects of one single color can be fixed separately without halting the whole production line.

Every plate change requires re-mounting, positioning and pressure adjustment. Human operation brings alignment errors, resulting in ghosting and misregistration during multi-color printing.
Frequent plate replacement increases material expenses. Plate changeover also requires machine downtime, test printing and consumes labor and paper, lowering equipment utilization.
Well-run-in plates maintain stable elasticity and ink transfer. New plates need re-adjustment, leading to inconsistent ink shade between production batches.

Exercise books are printed on regular writing paper with uneven texture. The elasticity of printing plates ensures uniform ink transfer.
Exercise book artwork mainly consists of lines, grids and simple text. The precision of printing plates fully meets production standards.
Exercise books have various formats for different grades. Printing plates support fast revision and flexible production.
Exercise books are low-margin commodities. Affordable printing plates effectively control overall production costs.
